Corazon Aquino, the widow of slain Philippine presidential candidate Ninoy Aquino, has died at age 76 of colon cancer.
Aquino was the first female president of the Republic of the Philippines. She took over her husband, Benigno “Ninoy” as the prime symbol of the opposition when he died in 1984 returning from Boston from exile. As the President, she managed to make the long journey of the Philippines to return to its democratic roots, although she was criticized that she could have used her inherited tremendous power from the Marcos regime to implement change to a country that was long overdue for social equity.
Sumalangit nawa. Corazon Aquino, 1933 – 2009.
