Hooray for Kansas!

kansas bandThe folks in Kansas aren’t having anything to do with Obamacare.  Several state senators are planning to introduce a bill, which would keep Kansans free.  Free I tell you.  It is every Kansan’s right to not have healthcare.  And they certainly aren’t going to silently sit by while some Kenyan forces health on them.

Kansas is an interesting state.  Many liberals have lamented “what’s the matter with Kansas?”  Some have joked that the only thing standing between Oklahoma and Nebraska is Kansas.  But if you have never been to the state, you may not understand the fine folk of The Sunflower State.

Kansans are proud, and very religious.  They are extremely conservative, and they like the simpler things in life.  Fancy things like indoor plumbing and electricity are shunned with the fervor of an Amish barn raising.  They don’t like the homos, even though they seem to push the Wizard of Oz crap in every shop.  Evidentially no one ever bothered to check if Judy Garland was some sort of gay icon.  And they wonder why when a Kansan boy goes to New York City, he ends up getting picked up by a gay.  It isn’t the whole “corn-fed” thing.  It’s the fucking “Auntie em hate you hate kansas took the dog-Dorothy T-shirt.”

In short, Kansas refuses to do what Washington tells them, even if the citizens are poor as dirt and can’t afford healthcare and nearly 12% of the population lacks health insurance.  But who cares about 330,000 people?  It’s not like they vote or anything.

Or do they?

Kansas is about to become the crucible.  And Republicans may find their grip on The Wheat State slipping through their fingers.  When the Democrats pass healthcare reform, it will be with an opt out option.  Those states which opt out, may risk a rebellion from their citizens.  If you thought the tea parties were fun, wait until hundreds of thousands unemployed uninsured people with nothing to do on say a Tuesday in November get together to cast ballots.  It will make Bleeding Kansas look like child’s play.

What’s the matter with Kansas?    Time will provide an answer.  Remember, it was in 2006 when Kansans threw out the “intelligent design” crowd from the state school board.  Kansas voted for Obama in a greater percentage than 7 other states.  Kansas is full of surprises.

It is also full of uninsured people.

And lots of corn.

And a couple of tornados.
